Please, we surrender

Went to the opening of Strictly Painting 6: Color Field Revisited at the [tag]McLean Project for the Arts[/tag], the 947th [tag]Washington Color School[/tag] tribute show of the year. They were actually opening 3 shows at once that night and it was too crowded to see much of the work. I forgot to mention it until I saw Jessica Dawson’s review yesterday in the Washington Post:

Hileman, an assistant curator at the Hirshhorn Museum, expanded her directive to include artists playing up and contorting the customary relationship of pigment to canvas and those emphasizing abstraction — that is, most painters of the mid-to-late-20th century. To that end, ghosts of Richard Diebenkorn, Frank Stella, Agnes Martin and late Gerhard Richter outnumber artists evoking Color School cronies Morris Louis and Kenneth Noland.

For that, we can be thankful. Color School, of course, represents just a fraction of what happened at mid-century. And the movement’s impact, this show readily admits, was hardly overwhelming.

It seems like a nice show, I’ll have to stop by again when I can see the work.
