Maximizing the number of commercials you have to slog through, these related pieces are broken up into two parts on the Colbert Report instead of one segueing into the other. You’ll live.

Since bananas have been a recurring theme lately, I thought I’d post this hilarious clip from the Colbert Report:

Glenn Beck’s Goldline ads make me want to crawl out of my skin- I’m going to embed a short mash-up of Beck’s gold-pandering for reference in the event you’re unaware of his idiocy:

If you want to learn about bananas, the USDA National Agricultural Library is a great place to start. I was going to do a quick search to find the exact number of banana varieties (it’s around 1000, not 1 – the number being widely reported in blight stories), but now I’m fascinated by stats that the Cavendish accounts for only 13% of the total world crop. 13% of 98 million tons isn’t insignificant, but it’s a much lower number than I expected to find. The economic consequence of blights and other problems aren’t diminished).

Fascinating. Now I need to drink some coffee and read more about bananas.

A few years ago I got roped into focus-grouping some potential campaign slogans for a neighbor. My suggestion, “He never killed a hobo!” went over like lead.

Last week, Stephen Colbert was interviewing South Carolina incumbent Bob Ingles. Colbert asked Inglis, “What do you know about this rumor that he [opponent Trey Gowdy] beat a drifter to death with a dinner plate?”

See, my idea was a good one after all. Stephen Colbert would never be snarky in an interview so it must be a good strategy.
