Why are people so shocked that Madonna can’t act?

People are shocked? I thought ‘Madonna can’t act’ was as universally accepted as ‘the Pope is Catholic’. She can’t sing, either, in case anyone’s going to be shocked by that revelation.

Weirdly, although I don’t really listen to her, I think she’s a great entertainer and an okay singer. It’s totally cracking me up, reading reviews of “swept away.” I thought the same thing you did Jen, but you put it better. *giggle*

Incidentally, if swept away is still in the theaters in a couple of weeks I’m going to be looking for a volunteer to see it with me. The “willfull bad movie selection rule” being in full force. (whereby, whoever selects a bad movie intentionally based on it’s alleged badness has to pony up for the tickets and popcorn).

I would totally go see it for the cheese factor.
And I do think your popcorn and tickets idea is a fair one. Hmmm. I think I’d spring for popcorn but not ticket – even for seeing a bad film the person should have to pay for their own ticket. I’d substitute soda for ticket. Must have soda with popcorn.
No, she can’t act, but I’ve always enjoyed watching her movies – when I can see them for free on tv and surf the net or read at the same time. Though I still think she was good in Desperately Seeking Susan. Then again, she was playing herself. My favorite part of that film was her luggage – I loved the skull stensils on the luggage. Wonder if I can find a photo of that somewhere…
*plans on snagging stensil ideas*

Don’t forget The Next Best Thing. That was her worse performance by far.

Ok, someone HAS to help me find a photo of that hatbox luggage from Desperately Seeking – I need a photo of that skull stencil! The net is failing me! I can’t find the images! Argh!

I think I repressed that one, Melly.
I thought, even playing herself, she was pretty bad in Susan.
You used to be able to get that luggage but I think it must have become collectible after the movie came out. My friend Jenny might still have the hatbox, Batty, I’ll let you know.

Better to go see the original Wertmuller version of “Swept Away” than the limp Guy Ritchie remake. I should rent the original if I can find it anywhere.

But Tom, I want to see the remake simply because it’s supposed to be awful. I’m hoping it’s at least Vanilla Sky awful, I believe Exorcist 2 awful is too much to hope for. It’s just so rare to have the nexus of a linda blair tap-dancing sequence, richard burton, and james earl jones throwing up a leopard. The planets have to be aligned just right. But hope springs eternal and someday I find another film as perfectly, delectably rotten as that one.

Wow, i’m extra-incoherent today.
