marathon (wo)man

Tomorrow in New York City, 2.5 million spectators are going to line the streets to watch 45,000 (correction: the 1st draft said 15,000) people run the 40th annual New York City Marathon.

Two of those runners are the TX Skatemom and Heather O’Keefe Gardner (aka HokGardner).

I can’t remember if Skatemom puts her real name on the web so I’m leaving it out for now. She exists, I’ve even met her! We met up at the finish of the Marine Corps Marathon – I was Batgrl’s surrogate on Skatemom’s DC support crew. I’ve known Heather since we were 12, so I’m fairly certain she’s not one of my imaginary friends.

Here are some of the wackier stats I found in the ING NYC Marathon Press Guide:

Coors Light as the official beer? That’s cruel and unusual.

While you’re grumbling about the time change messing with your day, think about these two amazing women on their amazing journey through New York. I bet the most trying part of training is constantly having people defensively and aggressively tell them why they’d never run a marathon. Luckily, they’re both seasoned tri-atheletes and they’re made of pretty tough stuff so if anyone can handle it, they can. I certainly wouldn’t mess with either one of them.
