Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear

We had stupid-crazy good luck all weekend.

You name it, it worked out great for us. No delayed flights or traffic mis-haps. We got Doris Day parking, fast and easy Metro rides, a pretty good vantage point to watch the rally, immediate restaurant seating, sunny weather, good coffee, and as a bonus there were still 9:30 Club cupcakes* available at Buzz at 11:30 on a Friday night.

My opinion on the crowd size for the rally lies somewhere between Stephen Colbert’s 6 million and FOX’s “12 gay satanists and a stoned toddler.”

I think aerial views of the crowd and Metro ridership numbers probably tell the best story.

Metro officials said a new Saturday ridership record was set, with 825,437 trips taken. The average number of trips taken on a Saturday is about 350,000.

That’s about 475,000 additional round-trip riders, which, when you factor in the number of people who walked or took the bus, brings the estimated total of extra people on the Mall to about 250,000.

That’s a lot of sane people.

My favorite signs included, “I hate crowds,” “I’m holding a sign,” and “Don’t tread on snakes.”

We didn’t take signs because I hate wrestling signs on the Metro when it’s crowded.
