"Sound Bites"

If you want to hear great DJs at the 9:30 Club and eat lots of tasty food at a benefit for the DC Central Kitchen, you’re in luck because “Sound Bites” is exactly that, and it’s happening this Sunday (the 23rd).

Benefiting the D.C. Central Kitchen, a community kitchen focused on solving the interconnected problems of poverty, hunger, and homelessness, SoundBites is a half-outdoor feast, half-indoor concert full of tasty eats and hot jams. Starting the event is a tented food bazaar outside of 9:30 Club, chock-full of free samples from lots of the area’s finest cuisine-purveyors.

After getting your nosh on, we’ll open the Club’s doors, where you can work off all of that deliciousness by grooving with five of the scene’s best DJs and bands.

This May, help a D.C. establishment that truly deserves it, while having some of the best food-fueled fun of your life. With free samples from area restaurants including: BGR the Burger Joint • Busboys and Poets • ChurchKey • CommonWealth Gastropub • Cork EatBar • Fresh Start Catering • Harry’s Tap Room • Indique • Jaleo • Maddy’s Bar & Grill • Marvin • Masa 14 • Mie N Yu • Radius Pizza • Sâuçá • Taylor Gourmet • Zola Kitchen and Wine Bar

DC Central Kitchen is a worthy organization, and I’m not just saying that because their Chief Development Officer is one of our cool neighbors. You can buy tickets here

Artomatic Happy Hour & May Metro Music Source networking event

Wednesday the 19th brings the return of the Artomatic Happy Hour:

Artomatic Happy Hour
Wednesday, May 19
5pm – 7pm
Bistro Bistro
1727 Connecticut Ave, NW

Also on Wednesday, Dave Mallen, founder of Innovation Station Music, hosts a monthly music business networking event at Whitlows on Wilson. I’m super-lazy today so I’m going to copy/paste from the email Dave sent out because it says it’s okay to forward it:

Just a reminder about this month’s Metro Music Source networking event, which will be held Wednesday, May 19th at Whitlow’s on Wilson in Arlington, VA at 6pm!

This is a great opportunity to connect with others in the DC area music community and have fun doing it! The Metro Music Source was founded nearly a year ago with the goal of bringing the disparate elements of the vibrant DC music scene together, encouraging collaboration and knowledge sharing amongst music creators and music industry professionals, as well as helping to raise the profile of our music scene on a national level. ??In past months, MMS events have brought together local musicians, major and indie label executives, artist managers and marketing reps, record store managers, publicists, filmmakers, music publishers, producer/engineers, and more.

Whitlow’s is located at 2854 Wilson Blvd, Arlington, VA, 22201 (Metro: Clarendon). We’ll be meeting in the room with the 2 pool tables. Musicians are encouraged to bring their instruments and sign up for the Iota open mic next door (sign up by 7pm and 10pm).

I hear these are great events and I swear someday I’m going to get to one. This week is pretty hectic, with every night triple-booked, so I know I’m not going to make it this time. There’s always June…

The Mothership is MIA

We meet all kinds of interesting people at music conferences and pho dinners and stuff. One of these cool women manages the business affairs of George Clinton (Parliament, Funkadelic and The P-Funk Allstars).

I’ve always thought that must present all kind of fun and interesting challenges, not the least of which is untangling all of the bad deals, uncredited samples, and who knows what else. Despite all I know about the history 20th Century music, the recording industry, and pop culture, I had no idea until this morning that the Mothership has been missing since 1982.

You really must read this article, “In Maryland, George Clinton, Parliament-Funkadelic and a missing Mothership.” This is important stuff and it belonged on the front page of the Washington Post. This is the Mothership we’re talking about, after all!

Clinton & his compatriots are at the 9:30 Club tonight and it’ll no doubt be an amazing show, but I’m sad to say we’re going to sit this one out.
