and they say irony is dead…

Last week, DCBlogs linked to my Jonestown post, which mentioned that the phrase “drinking the kool-aid” was insensitive. An argument about the rest of the post, which had links about Obama, broke out in the comments – wherein readers were then accusing one another of…wait for it…wait for it…. drinking the kool-aid. Fascinating.

Nevertheless, thanks for the link DCBlogs, always a pleasure to see lots of new readers show up, especially when they seem to stay a while. I think visitors from DCBlogs may have one of the lowest bounce rates – don’t know what it means but I think it’s kind of interesting.

Friday Five

You might remember the Friday Five, you might not. When I moved the archives I didn’t restore these posts right away because so many of the links were dead, so if you’ve joined the site in the last couple years here’s the deal: I’m going to return to posting links to five sites I think readers of this site should check out. Hopefully a few will be new to you. Hopefully you’ll drop me a line and suggest interesting blogs you think I should see. (meanlouise at gmail dot com)

That’s it. It’s not rocket-science and it’s not a popularity contest. It’s just a peek into the sites that I read and think are fun or funny or interesting or smart or engaging or all of the above. I’ve been cleaning up bookmarks and rss readers and the emails I’ve tucked away with recommendations from readers so I might as well share the good stuff while I’m at it.

Plus, I know you’re looking for something to do to kill that chasm of time between lunch and happy hour.

1. DC social media goddess and Intellipedean Andrea Baker has been thinking a lot about work-life balance and social media.

2. I was greatly amused by feministe’s new tagline (or maybe it’s an old tagline and I just noticed it): “In defense of the sanctimonious women’s study set.” This is a really good group blog that’s been alive and kicking for a very long time and it’s nice to see a group blog stay fresh and exciting.

3. Porn Perspectives is always a good read. (caution: the images on this site may or may not be work safe. Just saying). Blogger Rebecca R explains her site on her about page much better than I can.

“The meaning of pornography has been a longtime interest. Growing up around entrepreneurial women who work in the adult industry, the charge that pornography is inherently exploitative of women always struck me as misguided. This fascination with the economics of pornography and its implications for women grew into my undergraduate honors thesis for the College of Social Studies at Wesleyan University. Having completed my thesis and graduated from college, my new objective is to bring my academic work into the “real” world, and this blog is a central component of this undertaking.”

4. This one was suggested by a reader, although I’ve of course forgotten who it was because I’ve got a mind like a steel sieve. Plus, I was recovering from surgery at the time so all of life is a little hazy from that time (see also: how I got addicted to the TV show Numb3rs). But I digress. The Roller Blog is a pop culture blog about the 70s and 80s. So far, I’m finding it entertaining as I peruse the archives.

5. Waiter Rant. This one’s been around for a while and it’s probably not new to you, but I’d forgotten about it until I found it in a bookmark folder marked “microwaveable pork-rinds.” It’s the only link in the folder and, although my blog has covered many topics, microwavable bacon doesn’t seem to be one of them.

Happy birthday, Tracy!

I’m a day late in wishing Tracy Lee happy birthday. What’s worse, I spoke to her no less than 3 (possibly 4) times yesterday on the phone and never once wished her happy birthday. I knew it was her birthday, even. ah, well, if Tracy doesn’t know I’m a bit scatterbrained by now she never will!
