In the summer of 1981 my brother and I spent a lot of time at our cousins house. They had a TV. And cable. And they were cool. And on August 1st, they got MTV. And they got to stay up as late as they wanted, so we all watched it’s debut.
I could spout some media and cultural theory bullshit about the dawn of MTV. Instead I’m just going to do what everyone else is doing and embed the moon landing station ID and the Buggles “Video Killed the Radio Star,” because frankly, as a 5th grader, watching the debut of MTV didn’t fill me with any grand-eloquent sense of the future of music. I just thought it was cool.
I have so much to do it’s ridiculous and it takes me three times as long to get anything done these days because I’m a bit decrepit. Still, last night I had to take a break from it all and watch a few episodes of Charlie’s Angels with Beth.
We watched three episodes from season 4, because that was what was on our Tivo, OverLord.
“Angels on Campus.” College professors get rich running white slavery rings for oil sheiks!
“Of Ghosts and Angels.” Ghosts! This is not to be confused with Haunted Angel,” the earlier episode where they proved that ghosts aren’t real and you can’t talk to them. In “Of Ghosts and Angels” we learn that ghosts are real and Tiffany can talk to them. This is also not to be confused with, The Seance, where they proved that ghosts aren’t real and you can’t talk to them.
And now, Ed Begley Jr on skates in a condensed youtube video of the episode (there’s no sound until :11).
Such great detectives. I love how they watch Rita being dragged screaming and fighting into a van while they stand around vapidly asking, “Where’s Rita going?”
Universal HD runs Charlie’s Angels pretty much around the clock, but you can also wallow in the Badness by visiting a fansite called the Townsend Agency.
Always great Victor Garber made an appearance in the finale of 30 Rock as the head of the Wool Council. You can watch the whole episode on hulu, which is worth it just to hear him say, “woooool.”
I just wanted to embed a picture of the hilariously surreal Wool Council mascot, but it appears that legally I can only link to it on my blog. Luckily, you can still embed things from nbc.com on myspace. Way to go, NBC – keeping it retro!
